Spotlight on Lulu Del Lua
Some people think modelling is all flaunting and strutting, a kind of captured coronation for those lucky enough to have beauty as their birthright. I certainly did in my younger years, perhaps explaining why it took me such a time to stop peering longingly through the veil separating models from mere mortals and step into the studio lights.
When I finally did, I found that modeling is vulnerability in all its human-ness. It is the stripping down of ego and expectation to expose oneself, and not in the sense that clothing is sometimes shed. Rather, it is daring to invite the gaze of our fellow humans in the hopes that we can express something meaningful about our shared condition. It is the seeking of connection.
No point of connection is more significant or real than the one between the model and photographer and so I feel very fortunate to have worked with Bruce multiple times. What the camera captures, Bruce creates. It is his ability to set an environment for expression and exploration, willingness to collaborate with and challenge his models, and technical knowledge that elevates what Bruce does from photography into art."
